ERM will be sponsoring and participating as a speaker in a session on Implementation of Bank Net Zero Commitments and Best Practices, which will focus on finding a pathway to achieving net zero commitments and the work that is needed in terms of data collection, quantitative analysis, scenario planning and overall strategy.

Many large banks have made net zero commitments and are increasingly backing them up with sector-specific 2030 targets. However, the pathway to achieving those targets remains unclear, and much work remains in terms of data collection, quantitative analysis, scenario planning and overall strategy implementation. Banks must consider how to gather the required data and develop the analytical frameworks to support engagement with clients and ultimately fulfill their commitments. Additionally, each set of targets released so far has some leading elements, but none are perfect, so there is a need to identify best practices that can be carried forward into future target-setting processes.

In this session, participants will:

• Dissect existing bank targets and understand their strengths and weaknesses
• Identify target-setting best practices in terms of ambition, scope, process, disclosure and execution
• Examine how the target-setting process could vary for other sectors, asset classes or types of banks
• Examine the data that needs to be collected and measured to implement net zero commitments and evaluate progress to achieve them
• Explore the quantitative analysis that should support bank/client engagement and financial decision-making within banks
• Evaluate examples of banks that have already put some of these systems in place and evaluate lessons learned from their experiences

Attendees such as bank leaders, bank investors and civil society will be able to gain an understanding of the risks and opportunities of climate strategies and tactics in their journey to net zero commitments.
